THE ROLE OF AGRICULTURAL R & D RE-EMPHASIZED

Agriculture is an important sector for reduced poverty and suffering among people in the least developed countries (LDC). Agriculture has remained the single most important sector for employment and livelihood in LDC. It is also indicated that the highest proportion of the people living below poverty line is made by poor small scale farmers. Improving agricultural productivity is therefore a big step towards attaining the millennium development goals. Drawing an experience from India, agricultural research and development (R & D) is found to play a critical role in enhancing productivity. Agricultural development strategies in India emphasize on shifting from resource and input based growth to knowledge and science based growth triggered by innovations and the application of science to agriculture.
