COMPARATIVE ADVANTAGE: A STRATEGIC INVESTMENT IN THE AGRICULTURAL SECTOR

Stephen Were Omamo, a hitherto economist with IFPRI has recently co-authored a research report which analyzes agricultural development priorities and investment patterns and evaluates opportunities for increasing both agricultural and overall economic growth in the Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA) Region. Were Omamo and his co-authors are suggesting areas of investment and type of crops that will have a sound comparative advantage for each country in the Region. The research shows that Tanzania has comparative advantage over other SA countries in a variety of livestock and crops production. The Were Omamo report supports the similar observation by the Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC), which shows that Tanzania’s potential and comparative advantage far exceeds other ESA countries. Presenting the “Tanzania Investment Overview” to Australian investors in Adelaide, recently, the Executive Director of TIC, Mr. Emmanuel Ole Naiko, shows Tanzania is currently the best investment destination in Africa. It is hoped that the centre will extensively use the report in the further campaigns for investment especially in the agricultural sector in the country.
